August Van Wanzeele

(1916-1981)

August Van Wanzeele was born on May 3, 1916. He was the son of art painter Jules Van Wanzeele and Marie Vanderghinste. The family had 3 children. Fons, the eldest, followed in the footsteps of his father and became an artist as well. CĂ©line, the youngest, became a teacher. August followed his own path and joined the Gendarmerie on July 1, 1935.

August Van Wanzeele worked himself through all levels of the military police. Meanwhile he got his degree in Criminology at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. In 1975 he obtained the highest possible degree, that of Lieutenant General. In 1976 he was appointed Commander of the Belgian Gendarmerie. In 1978 he honorably retired. He died, after a short illness, on September 10, 1981.
